I love to eat and sushi is definitely my favorite food. I've been to Japan twice and, believe it or not, São Paulo has sushi restaurants just as good as those in Japan. At the beginning of the 20th century, we had one of the largest Japanese immigration flows in history, and today there are over 2 million descendants living in Brazil. That's why you'll find so much good Japanese food here!
Of course, you won't find great sushi on every corner, because unfortunately Brazil has a fixation on all-you-can-eat restaurants and, in my opinion, quantity is inversely proportional to quality. But if you're looking for incredible sushi at a fair price, you can go to one of these options with your eyes closed. None of them are all-you-can-eat, haha :)
Sushiguen - Rua Manoel da Nobrega, 76 / Paraíso
Right on Avenida Paulista, Sushiguen is in a gallery next to the Brigadeiro Metro station. This place has been serving up delicious Japanese food for over 50 years, from sushi combos to udon and tempura. You won't find any fusion here, just classic Japanese flavors. One time, I was all by myself at home and thought, "I'm going out to eat!" Since I was dining solo, I went for a Special Tirashi - sushi rice bowl. Man, that dish was amazing! I still dream about it sometimes!
If you are thirsty after the meal, The Punch Bar is right next door and they specialize in Japanese-inspired drinks. In my opinion also one of the best places in town. It's the perfect way to end the night!
Price: $25 - $40 p/ person.
Kubo Zushi - Rua das Tabocas, 158 / Vila Madalena
This place is hands down one of the best restaurants in São Paulo. The fish is always super fresh, the service is top-notch, and the beer is ice cold. I love sitting at the counter and watching Serginho and Panda work their magic. They always make me feel like I am at home.
I usually start with a sashimi set, but always skip the salmon. For me its taste is always the same. Then I mix it up with a few different kinds of sushi and finish with a Tamago - japanese sweet omelet. It's the perfect way to end the meal. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Uni, Unagi, and the spice tuna handroll. You won't be disappointed.
Price: $35 - $55 p/ person.
Massae San - Rua Leopoldo Couto Magalhães 275 / Itaim Bibi
Located in Itaim Bibi, the financial heart of São Paulo, Massae San combines a super cool atmosphere, good food, and a fair price. Everything that I love! Formerly known as Shigueru, after the sushiman of the same name, the restaurant changed its name a few years ago, but the quality remains the same.
If I had to choose a restaurant for a date, I think this would be the place! It would give the impression of someone who knows what is good and doesn't seem snobbish or arrogant.
Now, talking about food, Massae San focuses on sushi and sashimi, but there are options for hot dishes like Karê, Shogayaki, Tempura, etc. Whenever I go there I end up ordering the same thing: the Jô combination (for two people) or the Tokujô (for three people). In my opinion, they deliver a bit of everything in the ideal quantity and for a very good price.
Price: $35 - $55 per person.
Well, I hope you can visit one of these restaurants and let me know what you think! ;)
